One Little Word challenge

Thanks to Mandy and Katherine for posting their one little word challenges! I would've missed this one if I hadn't seen their thoughtful posts. The idea originally comes from the Two Writing Teachers blog.

I've thought about my word for a while now... and I think I have to go with my initial word.

STAND

I do love my "why" philosophy for this school year but have to add "stand" to help focus myself.

*Stand up for what I believe in.
*Stand strong when faced with tough challenges.
*Stand firm when asked to do things I don't believe to be best practice.
*Stand proudly as a member of the #nerdybookclub.
*Stand alone when necessary.
*Stand up for my students and what I believe to be best for them.
*Stand next to my first graders as they discover who they are as readers.
*Stand my ground as a believer in authentic learning experiences for children.
*Stand true to who I am.
*Stand up when trying new things, new ideas, and new learning.
*Stand back when I need to.

What would you choose as your one little word?

  2. A great word for you Laura. When I first read about choosing one word on Twitter CAN immediately came to my mind. I CAN make a difference in my life and the life of my students, colleagues, family and friends. I CAN make things happen when others feel it's impossible. I CAN block out the negative and I CAN embrace the positive. I CAN do anything I set my mind to. Karen

  3. What a great word! I picked COMPLETE for 2011 so I would finally finish some projects. My word for 2012 will probably be LISTEN. I need to listen more than I talk!

  7. I love your OLW choice too! Especially "stand alone when necessary." That's powerful stuff! I'm still mulling over my OLW for this year . . . er, hope it picks me soon!

  8. Fantastic word choice. If anyone can live up to this, it will be you.

I ended up choosing "health" for my OLW this year. I have been dealing with several health issues among various family members and it hasn't been easy. So I decided that I really needed to focus on health this year - physical, mental and emotional.

  9. Love your word, Jill! And, Michelle, I hope your word picks you soon, too!

I've been thinking more about my word. I think it actually chose me back at NCTE when I chatted with Ellin Oliver Keene. I was sharing some of my current frustrations with things that are happening in my district and feeling the need to fight for what I know is right. Her words of wisdom to me were that it's often the best teachers who are in the most trouble. ;) I choose to stand.
